Why Use Umbilical Cord Tissue Products?
- Umbilical cord tissue products can be very rich in mesenchymal stem cells, due to the area in the cord known as Wharton’s Jelly. This can be beneficial for treating damaged tissues of the knee. Furthermore, these stem cells are quite young, and so they have an amazing capacity to become any type of cell in the body. The idea is that by injecting the umbilical cord tissue products directly into the injured area, those cells may regenerate, heal and repair, the damaged tissue there. For example, stem cells injected into an arthritic knee could stimulate the body’s healing response and potentially renew the damaged cartilage cells.
Where does the Umbilical Cord Tissue Product come from?
- The umbilical cord is voluntarily donated by mothers in the US who give birth via C-section to a full-term healthy baby. This is done with their consent and transparently. The umbilical cord is usually discarded regardless, and in this situation, the material can go to a good cause.
- The umbilical cord is safely stored, then tested for infectious disease and other issues. If it is safe to use, then it will be stored at a bank until someone uses it for stem cell therapy. This process is followed by guidelines from agencies such as the FDA, National Institutes of Health, the American Association of Blood Banks and the American Association of Tissue Banks.
The injections stimulate a healing response to the knee ailment that is troubling you. Within a few weeks, you should experience a marked difference in pain, symptoms and mobility of your knee.
